Child Welfare Training Academy 


Welcome to the one-stop training resource for social workers, support workers, and resource parents!

Child welfare work is challenging. Training can broaden your knowledge, enhance your skills, and refresh your capabilities. Through ongoing professional development, you gain new perspectives while also meeting requirements you may have to maintain your license. Some training is mandatory; both before you take on a new role (pre-service training) and while you are on the job (in-service training). Elective trainings are courses you choose to take to empower yourself. The Child Welfare Training Academy at CFSA has lots to offer to further your professional development. Many courses have CEUs available, and all are free of charge.

To get started:

  1. Review CWTA training calendar to find what’s available.
  2. Review the CWTA Course Catalog to read detailed descriptions of each course.
  3. Select the training appropriate to your requirements, being sure to include any mandatory training that you must attend.
  4. Register for the training sessions that fit your schedule:

 

Social Workers Supervisors Support Workers Nurses Resource Parents

New Hires:
You must take pre-service training unless you have proof of completing the program within the past 24 months.

Ongoing Social Workers 30-hours In-service training required.

 

 

 

New Supervisors:

You must complete pre-service: Mastering the Art of Child Welfare Supervision within 8-months of assuming supervisory responsibility.

 

Supervisors and Program Managers 24-hours In-service training required.

New Family Support Workers:
You must complete the same Pre-service Training as social workers. Tier II training is highly recommended but not required.

Support Workers 30-hours In-service training required.

 

New Nurse Care Managers are required to complete 80 hours of Pre-service training. Parts of Tier II training is highly recommended.

1. Complete the Resource Parent registration form.
2. Then, save the form onto your computer.
3. Finally, send an email with your completed form attached to cwta.training@dc.gov
4. Or, send your completed form through US Mail to:
