Legally freeing a child is an action that breaks all legal ties between a parent and a child.
Legally freeing a child can happen one of two ways. One way is to have parents voluntarily relinquish their parental rights. The second method is to have a termination of parental rights (TPR). A TPR is a legally binding court decision made by a judge that ends all parental rights of birth parents, which consequently frees the child to be adopted. This tip sheet covers the process by which to legally free a child.
